  1. Find the original publication. A validated instrument has named authors, a year and a journal. If nobody can tell you who wrote a scale, treat it as unpublished until proven otherwise.
  2. Search PubMed for the name. Zero results for a scale described as widely used in clinical practice is itself the answer. Published instruments generate follow-up studies, translations and reviews.
